Meet The Staff

Sophie Kogan

Chair

Welcome to Mars!

My name is Sophie Kogan and I am excited to present to you LAMUN XXI’s Expedition to Mars! I am currently a fourt year student at UCLA studying Applied Math and Chemistry and am in a Computational Chemistry Lab (so policsi right?). I am a Los Angeles native and true valley girl from the San Fernando Valley.

Beginning my MUN stint in high school, I joined MUN at UCLA as a freshman and served as USG of Crisis for BruinMUN and LAMUN and recently as SG of BruinMUN 33. When people ask why I continued Model UN as a STEM major, I always give my cliché answer that it is the people and friends in this club that make it worthwhile, and so I hope to return the favor by creating an incredible adventure through space and time.

Outside of the club, I enjoy reading philosophy, hosting a good themed party, taking a lovely day at one of our many LA museums, or running billiards. I did dance for over a decade and the sport still holds a special place in my heart, however, I recently took up golf and have been loving it.

I am thankful to have the opportunity to chair this committee with Isabella and see the creative ways in which you delegates will giggle and goof around Mars. We cannot wait to see you all in April!!

Sincerely,

Sophie Kogan | Chair

Isabella Torriani

Crisis Director

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to LAMUN XXI– My name is Isabella Torriani (she/her) and I’m very excited to be your Crisis Director for Earther? We Hardly Know Her: Mars Exploration 2050.

To introduce myself, I’m a fourth-year Neuroscience and Political Science double major from San Diego, California. From having approximately 300 tabs open to prepare for my biochemistry final to conducting constitutional research on the Philippines, my time here at UCLA has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Outside of academics, I collect copies of Dorian Gray, enjoy Parts Unknown reruns, and am a massive fan of all things David Bowie. I have always loved crisis, and have received recognition from Best Delegate for Outstanding CD at LAMUN XIX’s JCC and at LAMUN XX’s BoD– and I am so excited to see what this committee has in store for us.

Earther? We Hardly Know Her: Mars Exploration 2050 grapples with a near future both alien and familiar. As our planet becomes less and less habitable, industry continues to deplete our natural resources. As progress seems to stagnate back home, the most opportunistic members of our society have taken it upon themselves to chart a new course for humanity. That, of course, means our future is in the hands of the political schemers, the media moguls, and academics desperate to break through to a cynical, jaded audience whose lives have been commodified since the moment they were born. Whether this expedition ends up for better or worse, time will only tell.

I look forward to seeing how you work together to rewrite this unsettling trajectory, find habitation among the cosmos, and balance the self interest of a rather unsavory cast of characters with the future of humanity. After all, it’s only the end of the world we’re talking about here.

Best of luck,

Isabella Torriani | Crisis Director
