Single Delegate General Assembly

Committee Summary

Topic: Strengthening the Antarctic Treaty System in the Face of Emerging Geopolitical and Environmental Challenges

In a world, 2048, where the Antarctic Treaty System has expired, the race for Antarctica's untapped resources begins. This committee tasks delegates to make recommendations on how to update the current treaty to govern the last unclaimed frontier of the Earth. Representing each distinct country, delegates must navigate a volatile geopolitical landscape while vying for control of the continent’s vast resources.

Antarctica’s unparalleled wealth— minerals, energy sources, and scientific potential— is ripe for exploitation, but the stakes are extraordinarily high. Delegates face the difficult challenge of balancing the peaceful uses of this unclaimed frontier with pressing issues such as environmental protection, tourism, and the regulation of non-governmental activities. They must navigate the integration of new and existing technologies, ensuring sustainable exploration while addressing global concerns about climate change and fragile ecosystems. Simultaneously, policy-based conflicts will emerge over territory allocation, governance structures, and the formation of alliances. The challenge lies in striking a delicate balance between collaboration and competition to shape Antarctica’s future.

Meet The Staff

Raghu Kommalapaty

Chair

Hello Delegates,

My name is Raghu Kommalapaty, and I will be the Chair for the 2048 Antarctic Convention committee at LAMUN XX! I firstly just want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to prepare for and attend this committee and also welcome you to what I am hoping to be an insightful and fruitful weekend of debate.

I am currently a senior at UCLA, graduating with a double major in Global Studies and Economics. I originally hail from Worcester, Massachusetts, so hopefully, this gives you an understanding of my love for both the Celtics and Patriots, as well as all things that come with the snow. I am also a big fan of Trap, Detroit rap, and Global Drill music, as well as making similar types of music.

I started MUN in 7th grade and have never looked back. I loved the idea of being able to put unique ideas and solutions to work while meeting amazing, new people with similar ideas and interests. When I joined MUN at UCLA, I was slightly unsure about how college MUN would function and whether I would fit in or not. However, I found my community here and loved the atmosphere, support, and people from not only my club but also from the countless delegations I have met from across the country. At UCLA, I have served as the USG of GA at our high school conference, the Secretary-General of LAMUN last year, and as a head delegate on our team this year, where I have met countless LAMUN attendees and hope to meet more this year.

I am incredibly excited to end my ten years of helping run Model UN conferences with this committee. Having participated in too many GAs over the years, this committee will provide a means to look into the future and solve issues of the environment and geopolitics nearly 25 years from today. I cannot wait to see how you all come up with innovative solutions to tackle these issues, all while demonstrating the leadership skills that are needed in today's society. I know that you will make one of my last committees that much more special.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at antarctic@uclamun.org, and I look forward to seeing you all soon!
